Kurt “Heavy Drop” Gruber grew up hunting, and has been shooting competitively since 2002. He began with USPSA Pistol Shooting and quickly proceeded to Limited (B Class) and Open (C Class) in USPSA competitions. Since returning from a 2-month deployment as an IT contractor on the Horn of Africa and a 21-month contracting deployment in Iraq, his primary competitive focus has been 3 Gun shooting, though he also competes in precision rifle and USPSA pistol. To new shooters he says:

“Don't hesitate to go up to that guy in a shooting jersey and ask your questions.  The competitive shooting community in general and the 3 Gun community in particular is a very open and sharing bunch.  Don't worry about how you finish.  Shoot your best match, always be looking to and open to learning something you can apply later, don't get frustrated if you don't do as good as you think you should, and never quit working hard to get better.”
